The Future of Rugby Union

Barry Lees27 Jan - 11:44

Rugby clubs to have their say.

Members may be aware through national media that concerns have been raised in the way the RFU Executive are running the game and in particular bonuses being paid to members of the RFU Board when staff members have been made redundant. The Chairman has resigned and has been replaced by Sir Bill Beaumont who is acting as Interim Chairman until a suitable replacement can be recruited.
The RFU referees have organised an action for a Special General Meeting to be called where the main proposal will be for members to consider a motion of ‘No Confidence’ in the current CEO, Bill Sweeney. This SGM is due to take place on 27th March, 2025.
These disruptions have resulted in Sir Bill Beaumont putting in place a number of face-to-face and online meetings with clubs to discuss the current state of the game. The face-to-face meetings are being held at twelve regional locations.
Vale Chairman Andrew Perry and Director / President Elect Barry Lees have secured places to represent the club and attend the local meeting at Sedgeley Park RUFC on 12th February. Hopefully there will be opportunities for them to put forward concerns on behalf of this club. Amongst other things, they will try and introduce the negative effect on clubs following the introduction of ’12 team leagues’ some years ago and the difficulties in getting women’s rugby going in the North of England.
Should any member have any thoughts that they feel strongly about that should be changed and would lead to improvements in the game at our level, please email valechairman@outlook.com with those views and the club’s representatives will endeavour to present them to the meeting.
Please email BEFORE Friday, 7th February and include a telephone number to allow for any follow up prior to the meeting.

Ave Atque Vale.
