Front runners for promotion Hull faced struggling Vale of Lune for the first time at the Hull Sports Centre, although the two clubs last confronted each other at Hull’s former ground at Haworth Park in April 2005 when the Vale lost a North One fixture, 53-20, and were subsequently relegated.
Bacon baps were the food of choice, quite appropriate in the Chinese Year of the Pig, as the Vale assembled for an early start for their cross country journey to Hull very conscious that both body and mind would need to be fully fuelled up as they faced the prospect of being brought into the cross hairs of the North Premier leaders telescopic sights.
Vale were without a number of their regular players, only ten of the squad which faced Alnwick on their last outing being available, but they did welcome back experienced forwards Andy Powers and Ross Pillow, who were both injured against Kirkby Lonsdale in early January.
Chilling Blaydon memories lurked in the subconscious, an air of trepidation swirled around inside the coach as it made its way over the Pennines with Storm Erik still making its presence felt. All the premonitions came flying out into the open as the Vale suffered their heaviest ever league defeat and for the second time this season failed to score any points.
Of course the lack of their regular players was a large factor in such a whopping defeat but the Vale never threw in the towel because on the day they were confronted by a strong, well organised, single minded, quick thinking, fast moving group of players whose major aim is to secure promotion and on the evidence displayed against the Vale to capture the title sooner if not later; it would be a major catastrophe if Hull were to surrender their 18 point lead over their nearest rivals.
Vale task became ever more difficult when in the early minutes they lost the services of stand-off Ben Dorrington with a worrying wrist injury. Ben who made 87 appearances for Hull and scored 16 tries was a very popular, highly regarded player when he donned a Hull jersey.
His departure threw an even heavier burden on the Vale’s shoulders but they faced the challenges head on without any shirking of responsibility. Luke Ford, at number eight, tackled himself to a standstill, Blake Steele in the unaccustomed role of scrum half and under constant pressure, played with resilience and composure.
In a contest where all the traffic was one way, skipper Fergus Owens did his upmost to keep a lid on things, ably assisted by Jonty Higgin, as did full back Chris Ramwell. In the forwards Harry Fellows and Adam Foxcroft grafted hard in the second row, flanker Ruan Fourie did his upmost to stem the tide, Aiden Yates propped with his usual commitment and Andy Powers was deservedly named man of the match.
Unfortunately the Vale were simply overwhelmed and the writing was on the wall as early as the fourth minute, when with the wind at their backs and the goal posts swaying alarmingly, Hull posted the first of their 15 tries when winger Michael Adlard streaked over in a sign of things to come. Stand-off, Simon Humberstone kicked the conversion, his first of 11 successful attempts.
Hull piled on the points and agony at regular intervals and by half time they had established a nightmarish lead of 56 points. A rampant Hull side were quickly into their stride in the second forty with an unconverted try after a couple of minutes, and from a Vale perspective a century loomed.
There was no easing up from the home side, the scoreboard tracked Vale’s downfall but there was the occasional flash of defiance from the Vale. Fergus Owens made a solo run from deep before the cover engulfed him, Adam Foxcroft made a promising break before cramp halted his gallop, Ruane Fourie and Luke Ford wrestled his way out of tackles but Hull were always quick to shut down any threat of danger and for the third time this season they prevented the opposition from scoring.
With the game drawing to a close the Vale made their first visit into Hull’s five metre zone but from their own line out possession was lost the net result was that Hull used up the last of their fuel in the afterburners to rocket their way up field for an unconverted try in the second minute of extra time.
The try scores for Hull were, wingers Steve Hihetah and Michael Adlard with 5 and 4 respectively, centre Ali Heard collected a brace as did wing forward, Thomas O’Donnell, with replacement Keane Naylor and centre Steve Johnson bagging one each in what had been a whirlwind performance that emphasised the gulf that is to be found between the two extremes of North Premier.
While Hull are destined for higher things the Vale are desperately clinging on for survival in the league and on Saturday at Powderhouse Lane they will be embroiled in a make or break fixture against fellow strugglers Lymm. A five pointer should go a long way, for either side, to momentarily lift their fears of the drop but even so the six games which are due to follow are fraught with danger for not only the Vale and Lymm but also Wilmslow and Kendal who are also scrambling to find a way out of a crater of doom.
For the Vale every game becomes a cup final but the run in is far from a done deal, tough fixtures await beginning with the visit of Lymm, who like the Vale will be going all out to avoid a defeat that might have lasting consequences.
