Once again Team Manager Tony Gilmour was faced with last minute calls for players to move up to the first team but he somehow managed to put together a side to face formidable opponents. The Sedgley Park side, in common with the top sides in this most competitive of leagues, was full of young players mixed with a degree of experience, and played at pace and ability. Dan Rainford, Vale's skipper, observed after the game that these sides had moved on some 25% since last season.
Sedgley kicked off, their ball catcher was driven back two metres by Liam Hall, the ball was moved to Sean Berrisford but he was caught from behind, the ball was turned over which allowed Park to break way from inside their twenty two for a converted try after five minutes. Park added another converted try a minute later.
Danny Lin, playing with massive energy throughout drove forward from the restart, Rhys Randall following up took a pass at pace but the move fizzled out, referee Chris Meadows, who had an excellent game, awarded Sedgley a scrum at the breakdown.
A stretched Vale defence conceded a converted try in the twelfth minute. A minute later fly half Danny Harris broke away and tried to angle a shrewd kick in the direction of Sean Berrisford but unfortunately the ball went straight into touch. After playing in the number nine jersey for the thirds the previous week, Danny Harris looked comfortable throughout at stand off.
Ryan Needham, in what was his first game of the season, made a massive, dangerous break down the middle but the move petered out through lack of support. As the final quarter drew to a close Sedgley produced a brilliant counter attack that if it had succeeded could have been a contender for try of the season, but Chris Thomas, playing in the centre had other thoughts, chased down the attack and pulled off a try saving tackle by vale's posts. Unfortunately from the result ruck the home side broke wide for a try wide out.
In the twenty fifth minute the hard working Liam Hall sustained an injury and was replaced by Archie Rich. Shortly after the Vale were awarded a penalty which was kicked by Aaron Melville. Once gain Aaron had an influential game, tackling soundly, looking for space, putting in some accurate kicks even when under severe pressure. Just before the interval Sedgley added to their total.
Tony needed to pull the side together and gave the team a stern talking to at the break. He pointed out how effectively Sedgley were employing the choke tackle resulting in the Vale giving away a number of needless penalties.
The second half started with uncontested scrums because Aiden Yates had to leave the action with a shoulder injury after he had made a powerful contribution during the first forty. Things were beginning to look grim for the visitors when Sedgley ran in four more converted tries.
Despite these set backs the Vale took the game to Sedgley. Jamie Antcliffe made a strong break through the centre but he lacked support. The players had listed to the coach's half time concerns about the choke tackle and with Dan Rainford leading from the front the Vale stated to break through the gain line.
A revitalised Vale stemmed the flow of points and were beginning to look more organised in all areas. Sam Hoare was to the fore, hurtling himself at Sedgley Park, Sam improves with every game he plays and forged a solid partnership with Danny Lin.
Excellent teamwork ensured that Park were kept at bay in the final fifteen minutes of what had been a hard encounter for the Vale. After the game the whole team were discussing the importance of getting together in the training sessions for the coming week and despite being unable to break their duck there is great optimism within the camp; that elusive first win can't be too far away.
