The Vale deserved their victory with a team performance that had the forwards and backs working in harmony in testing conditions.
Playing into a string cold wind the Vale began on the front foot when Chris Ramwell collected the ball close to his goal line to run the length of the field, slipping easily past defenders in a solo run for a thrilling try which Alex Briggs converted with an excellent kick.
Vale became dominant in all areas following their early score and in the twelfth minute they increased their lead when Sam Hoare battled his way over the whitewash for an unconverted try with opponents draped all over his torso.
Four minutes later the lively Tom Cvijanovic broke clear, his try being converted by Alex Briggs. The irrepressible Sam Hoare collected his second try when following the breakup of a scrum he somehow purloined the ball from under the noses of the opposition; Alex Briggs added the conversion in the twenty seventh minute.
Adam Macluskie’s determined run resulted in a try converted by Alex Briggs on the half hour. Wirral managed to compress the Vale deep in their own half but were unable to break through some resolute Vale tackling which enabled the hosts to turn round with a clean sheet.
The second half began on a positive note for the Vale when Tom Cvijanovic powered through a number of tackles for a try converted by Alex Briggs in the forty seventh minute.
Alex Briggs made a neat break before delivering a perfect pass to Chris Ramwell to touch down for an unconverted try.
Following this score there was a noticeable drop in Vale’s work rate and they started to coast along. Wirral took full advantage, and after a series of penalties they posted a converted try in the fiftieth minute.
Kyel Dempsey scored a try in the sixty third minute, converted by Alex Briggs, following an up tempo attack that allowed the winger to brush off the would be tacklers on his way to the line.
Holding an unassailable lead the Vale’s game lost some of momentum. Wirral made frantic efforts to collect further points but the Vale pulled their shutters down to thwart the visitors’ efforts.
