For those who have followed the fortunes of the seconds this heavy defeat came as no real surprise when the Kendal team trotted onto the pitch because it contained a healthy sprinkling of first team players who quickly laid down markers.
Earlier in the day a string of phone calls and texts from Dan Rainford ensured the Seconds eventually travelled to Mint Bridge with fifteen players including some familiar names. Prop Alex Cowey answered the call to arms, returning to the colours after a long absence. Two players who caught the eyes were brothers Waite, Andy and Nick, who both did their upmost the halt a tide that was in full flood. Nicky, playing in the centre, covered acres of the plastic, and could be seen on a number of occasions covering and tackling on both flanks. Robin Austin also created a favourable impression in a stern test of both character and technique.
Paul Scott, skipper of the Thirds, has now played in seven of the Second’s eight fixtures and as always never threw in the towel in this back to the wall encounter. Skipper Jamie Antcliffe ensured spirits remained high despite the punishment that was being dished out. Dan Rainford and Matt Field worked diligently throughout the mauling in a side contained only three players who had contributed to the victory against Kendal 2 at the end of September, 29-17.
Kendal were quickly into their stride to pile on the agony; it was all rather one sided and academic, referee Alistair Boyle had no hesitation in calling it a day and blowing the final whistle once the obligatory hour mark had been passed.
It had been a hard lesson for the Seconds to absorb but to their credit they battled bravely till the nightmare ended and must be applauded for the efforts.
