This was a totally committed performance from the seconds who picked up where they left off following their victory against Wirral 2 on December 21. On a windy and eventually wet day at Powderhouse Lane two well matched packs took centre stage but it was Vale’s mighty eight who eventually secured victory. However, the backs were not required just to stand and stare because they posed a threat in far from ideal conditions in particular from the exciting centre pairing of Matty Humpage and Martin Stretch.
Vale played into the wind for the first forty but it was evident from the early exchanges that any points on offer would have to be earned the hard way and it would require something special to open an account. In fact there was something slightly unorthodox surrounding the seconds opening score. Taylor Mills launched a booming kick in the direction of Lee Starkey’s who caught the ball in full flight to pelt towards the line, Stockport’s full back lined up the tackle but only succeeded in dragging Lee Starkey over the line who not only held onto the ball but squeezed it down for an unconverted try in the eighth minute.
Both defences were generally in control of the proceedings, the forward exchanges were value for money but the backs were more than willing to explore any avenues away from the clutter. Stockport stood firm and they knew they had the luxury of adopting the classic get out clause of just hoofing the ball downfield. As an absorbing half drew to a close Stockport edged into the lead after their forwards had bludgeoned their way over for a converted try.
Early in the second half Vale were reduced to fourteen players when James Cottrell was shown a yellow card, his first in 18 years, but their disappointment did not last too long because in the fifty second minute Lee Starkey lashed over a penalty goal from in front.
In a game of nip and tuck nerves and discipline were to play an important role, but referee Chris Hesketh quietly, but firmly, ensured that the game progressed smoothly.
As the clock ticked down Vale’s forwards set up camp deep inside Stockport’s twenty two and following a vigorous bout of arm wrestling the result was put beyond doubt with four minutes remaining. As the pack nudged their way towards the whitewash Petar Alexov produced a piece of magic and agility when he clamped on the ball and then flew over the top of the ruck for a dramatic try which Lee Starkey converted.
Everyone in Vale’s squad played their part, skipper James Hesketh was at his aggressive best, Dan Rainford made a series of energy sapping charges, and Rhys Randall used all his experience to exercise control in the line outs. Andy Waite and the ever improving Noah Tully were the pick of a splendid pack but all eighteen earned their corn and confidently look forward to their home game against Sandbach 2 on Saturday and will be hoping to reverse their defeat on the opening game of the season.
Thanks to Reg Robinson for his excellent notes.
