Vale registered their second league victory of the season against a Wilmslow side that battled hard throughout but were unable to cope with some enterprising rugby from the home side that put behind them defeats in their last two games.
In a whole hearted Vale performance Harry Fellows was a strong presence in the pack with Rob Ward making an important contribution in the threequarters.
Prop Alex Morrison set the try counter clicking with a popular five pointer after six minutes. Twelve minutes later skipper Doyle added a try, followed by another from the number ten which Gareth Price converted.
Two further unconverted tries were posted before the interval from Ward and Elliott Fowler as the Vale proved to be good value for their lead.
The home side maintained their momentum during the second half and before the hour they had extended their lead with tries from the hard working Andrew Wilkinson, his try being converted by Doyle. Ward added a second converted by Price and an unconverted try from Jimmy Birchall. During this spell of intense Vale activity referee Chris McDermott limped off to be replaced by the hugely experienced Robert Sheard.
Birchall’s second try ensured the Vale passed the half century mark for the first time since their defeat of Broughton Park last season. In the closing minutes of a free flowing, entertaining game Wilmslow avoided a whitewash with a try in the closing minutes.
Vale A: A Bargh; E Fowler, R Ward, J Birchall, A Muir, K Doyle (Capt), G Price: J Hodkinson, P Wilkinson, A Morrison; H Fellows, A Wilkinson, Wilkinson, I Turton, H Marsden. Replacements: P Jackson
