Vale produced a much improved performance after their heavy defeat the previous week, but two of the tries they conceded ensured the final score line was slanted in favour of the visitors but on reflection Chester could well have shaded the result even if these two fortuitous scores had been chalked off.
Again the Vale made changes in their line up with a number of newcomers rubbing shoulders with the experienced Danny Lin and club stalwarts Aaron Melville and Dave Harrison.
Sean Coulshed provided the ideal opening for the Vale with a fourth minute penalty goal. A determined Vale took the game to Chester, playing with increasing confidence. In the twenty fourth minute a fired up Vale added to their total after the home side's eight had applied sustained pressure on their opposite numbers and prop forward Matt Field blasted over, his try being converted by Coulshed.
Certainly the Vale were looking comfortable and in charge but in the thirtieth minute Chester gave notice of the threat they possessed with an excellent converted try.
Three minutes later Lady Luck, not for the first time, refused to smile on the hosts when a Vale attack unfortunately broke down after the ball was batted around but ended up surprisingly in the hands Chester's left winger who took off in a lung bursting run for a converted try.
This was a massive set back for the Vale who fell further behind to a penalty in the second minute of injury time, but three minutes later Coulshed also kicked a penalty.
Chester started the second half at a furious pace and before the Vale could react they succumbed to a well constructed try.
Changes were made in the vale's ranks because of injuries being picked up and they took a while to absorb to a new formation but their enthusiasm and desire remained high.
Unfortunately the Vale were guilty of not playing to referee Haywood's whistle and even though there was a suspicion of a forward pass the official was unsighted, play rolled on agonisingly towards the line and a converted try.
Vale played with heart and commitment; Sean Coulshed intelligently direct operations, Danny Lin was at his polished efficient best, Bob Mudd played with his customary zeal and Ross Pillow was rock solid.
On Saturday Vale, who are still searching for that elusive first win, travel to Wilmslow and will be hoping to emulate the B team who broke their duck against Colne and Nelson with a 32-0 victory.
