As always any fixture at Birkenhead Park is looked upon as tough encounter, but even before a ball was kicked in anger Vale frantically awaited the arrival of two of their players who were held up in the heavy traffic in Liverpool.
Once the game was underway Park gave notice of their intentions and subjected Vale to a barrage of intensive pressure which earned the hosts a converted try.
A resilient Vale side absorbed all that Park threw at them, kitchen sinks were quickly cast aside and in the twenty fifth minute Vale drew level with a try of the highest quality scored by Ryan Busby who also added the conversion.
Vale began to take control with prop Joe Stevens leading by example. He received splendid support from Joe Harrison and Bobby Holdbrook , these two players being a constant thorn in Park's side with their vigorous approach in all areas.
The pack began to exert an iron grip on the game, with Ewan Hutchinson and Matt davenport playing their part in ensuring a steady stream of ball from a solid base. Not only did Tom Needham and Joe Wilson lock the scrum up tight but they proved to be very industrious in the loose. At scrum half Jacob Thomas benefited from the high work rate and commitment from the forwards, in addition he made life increasingly difficult for his opposite number.
Vale's game began to flow and they were rewarded with a penalty which Ryan Busby but towards the end of the half Park recovered their earlier form to post a converted try as Vale momentarily lost their way.
Bobby Holdbrook scored a deserved try converted by “Buzzer” and Vale increased their lead with a try from the lively Dom Griffiths which Ryan again converted.
With Vale dominant Manager Dan Rainford threw the evergreen Jamie Antcliffe and Joe Wallbank into the mix and shortly after his arrival Joe brushed aside would be tacklers for a try between the posts which “Buzzer” converted.
Birkenhead Park did come back in the closing stages with a try but Vale's was never in danger at Upper Park Road North.
Two of Vale's younger players at half back Jacob Thomas and Joe Willis formed a most productive partnership throughout, Alex Batson,”Super Scribe,” has become an integral player in the back division, being quick, an elusive runner, and also decisive in the tackle. His partner in the centre, Ryan Fawcett, has proved to be a most valuable asset in a slick back division.
Winger Harrison Dodge, despite his lack of inches, never shirked a tackle on his powerfully built opponent, while on the other flank Adam Dalton unfortunately had few opportunists to display his attacking talents. Dan Rainford ensure Vale's momentum did not falter, ringing the changes at the first sign of fatigue he brought on another of the emerging players, Louis Evans for a shift in the back row.
Vale 2 have now won three games on the bounce but are fully aware of the challenges that await them, beginning on November 13 when they travel to take on Holmes Chapel 1, while waiting in the wings are Waterloo, Wilmslow, Orrell, Stockport and Kendal.
