Vale warmed up for their up coming cup game at Stockport on Saturday with a confidence boosting six try victory over Broughton Park. In many ways it was a comfortable deserved win for the home side and thoroughly deserved, despite some moments when the creative juices appeared to dry up.
Scrum half Charlie Lomas made an incisive break from a scrum for the opening try after ten minutes which like all the tries that followed went unconverted. Four minutes later Vale's highly mobile and well organised pack drove for the line. Park were unable to deal with a maul that gathered in momentum, hard working skipper Olly Cowey being awarded the try.
The Vale endeavoured to extend their lead but Park began to disrupt their efforts which caused a certain amount of frustration. Two penalty goals from the visitor's loose head prop in the twenty seventh and thirty sixth minutes had the Vale looking nervously over their shoulders. Calm and sanity returned when Alex Morrison picked up at the base of a scrum for a typical number eight's try in the final move of the half.
Vale began the second half on the front foot and in the forty sixth minute they went further ahead with a thrilling try. Olly Dobson made a purposeful break down the flank before slipping a pass behind his back to Charlie Lomas for the number nine's second try.
Again the game stalled but the Vale were always in control in particular in the forwards. On the hour Olly Dobson scored a deserved try and in the sixty seventh minute Alex Morrison completed the scoring when he was comprehensively driven over for his brace.
Rhys Randall was in commanding form throughout, Tom Cvijanovic was impressive yet again, Olly Dobson and Charlie Lomas were a lively, dangerous combination, while Mark Walker, who made 11 first team appearances in the 2006/07 season, created an immediate impact when he came off the bench.
